Der Widder ist ein Feuerzeichen und geht auf die Sage vom goldenen Vlies aus der griechischen Mythologie zurück.
Als König Athamas seinen ältesten Sohn Phrixos zu seinem Nachfolger bestimmte wollte, dessen Stiefmutter Ino ihren eigenen Sohn auf dem Thron sehen. Hierzu ließ sie die Saat für das folgende Jahr verderben. Die Ernte des nächsten Jahres war schlecht und sie ließ Athamas einen gefälschten Orakelspruch überbringen. Dieser besagte, dass eine Hungersnot nur dadurch abgewendet werden könne, wenn man Phrixos den Göttern opfere. Athamas glaubte an den Orakelspruch. Als er seinen Sohn Phrixos opfern wollte erschien ein Widder mit goldenem Fell. Phrixos griff sich seine Schwester Helle und schwang sich auf den Rücken des Widders. Dieser flog mit den beiden davon. Helle konnte sich nicht halten und stürzte ins Meer.
In Kolchis am Schwarzen Meer kam Phrixos der Bitte des Widders nach und opferte ihn. Hierauf bekam der Widder zum Dank einen Platz am Himmel zugewiesen. Das Fell des Widders, auch als goldenes Vlies bekannt, wurde in einem heiligen Hain aufbewahrt.
