Die Waage ist ein Luftzeichen und gehört zu den klassischen 48 Sternbildern der Antike, die von Ptolemäus beschrieben werden.
Um das Jahr 100 wurde der heute gebräuchliche Name Waage von den Römern geprägt. In ihr sahen sie ein Sinnbild der Gerechtigkeit.
Aber auch die Sumerer kannten das Sternbild schon als Waage. Vermutlich weil zu der Jahreszeit die staatlichen Steuereintreiber unterwegs waren und das als Steuer fällige Getreide mit einer Balkenwaage abwogen.
