Der Stier ist ein Erdzeichen und der griechischen Mythologie nach nahm Zeus die Gestalt eines Stieres an, um Europa auf seinem Rücken nach Kreta zu entführen.
Anderen Überlieferungen zufolge schickte Zeus einen Stier um Europa zu rauben. Als der Stier auf Kreta eine Beziehung zu Königin Pasiphae einging, entstand hieraus Minotaurus, das Ungeheuer. Der Stier wurde von Poseidon bestraft und musste in Zukunft Feuer speien. Herakles gelang es schließlich den Stier einzufangen und aufs griechische Festland zu bringen. Als er dort alles verwüstete wurde er von Theseus in der Nähe von Marathon getötet.
